Let's look at the graphs of the functions
:
8) f(x) = x^(1/2) (red line) and h(x) = -2(x-3)^(1/2) + 4 (green line)
:
The transformations have moved f(x) 4 units in the positive y direction, 3 units in the positive x direction and -2 flips f(x) upside down and stretches it.
:
9) f(x) = x^(1/3) (red line) and h(x) = (1/2)(-x+3)^(1/3)-1 (green line)
:
The transformations have moved f(x) 1 unit in the negative y direction, 3 units in the negative x direction, 0 < (1/2) < 1 compresses f(x) and -1 reflects f(x) about the y axis
