Question 830635: Hello!!! Okay so before I start I would like to say thank you first for taking your time to help me. The question that im confused on is this...
The pool on an architectural drawing is given by the equation x^2+6x+y^2+8y=0. What point on the edge of the pool is farthest from the origin?
So far I was able to complete the equation and got it to its standard form which is, I think, (x+3)^2+(y+4)^2=25. This shows that the radius is 5 units and the center is (-3,-4). The part that confuses me is the farthest point. Does this not me that the whole edge of the pool/circle is the farthest point? Or are there actual set points that is farther from the origin? Thank you!!!

Answer by josgarithmetic(39620)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!

The question is what point on the circle is farthest from the origin, (0,0)? The point you want to find is on the line which the center of the circle and the origin define.

What is the equation for the line containing (0,0) and (-3,-4)?
At which two points on the circle does this line and the circle intersect? ONE of these points is the answer to the question in your exercise.
