how do i know if a parabola opens right of left?

Opening right or left --> the y term is 2nd order, eg x = y^2
If x & y have the same sign in that format it opens right since x increases as y increases.
-----------
If it's x = -y^2 it opens left since x decreases (more negative) as y increases.
