This is an equation of a hyperbola with horizontal transverse axis.
Its standard form:, (h,k)=(x,y) coordinates of center
For given hyperbola:
center: (1,-1)
a^2=8
a=√8≈2.8
vertices: (1�a,1)=(1�2.8,1)=(1.8,1) and (3.8,1)
b^2=4
b=2
c^2=a^2+b^2=8+4=12
c=√12≈3.5
vertices: (1�c,-1)=(1�3.5,-1)=(2.5,-1) and (4.5,-1)
eccentricity=c/a=√12/√8=√(3/2)≈1.2
