Identify the focus and the directrix for the following parabola:
x-3y^2=0
-3y^2=x
y^2=-(1/3)x
This is an equation of a parabola that opens leftward.
Its basic equation: (y-k)^2=4p(x-h), (h,k)=(x,y) coordinates of the vertex.
For given parabola:
vertex:(0,0)
axis of symmetry: y=0 or x-axis
4p=1/3
p=1/12
focus: (-(1/12),0) (p-distance to the left of vertex on the axis of symmetry)
directrix: x=1/12 (p-distance to the right of vertex on the axis of symmetry)
