the arch of an underpass is a semi ellpise 20 m wide and 5 m high. find the clearance at the edge of a plane ,if the edge is 5m from the middle.sketch the graph.
**
Center of ellipse: (0,0) (middle of road)
a=10
a^2=100
b=5
b^2=25
Equation of ellipse:
x^2/100+y^2/25=1
Find clearence 5m from middle of road
x=5
25/100+y^2/25=1
y^2/25=1-25/100=1-1/4=3/4
y^2=75/4
y=√(75/4)≈4.33 m
see graph below:
y=(25-x^2/4)^.5
