Question 304919: This is "PROBLEM OF THE WEEK" and it is worth 20 points. I will type it exactly as it is printed. There are a couple of typos but maybe they are clues?
Winchester Census: During the recent Winchester census, a man told the census taker that he had three children. When asked their ages he replied, "The product of their ages is 72 and the sum of their ages is the same as my house number." The census taker ran to the dorr and looked at the house number. "I still can't tell," she complained. The man replied, "Oh, that's right. I forgot to tell you that the oldest one likes apple pie- a faborite dessert of many of the children here in the Valley." The census taker promptly wrote down the ages of the three children. How old are the children?

Answer by scott8148(6628)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
list all the triplet factors of 72 (like 3, 4, 6) and find the sums

the "apple pie" clue is telling you that the oldest child is NOT a twin (so 2,6,6 doesn't work)

you should find similar sums that are differentiated by the "oldest twin" condition
