Your explanation is understandable but not concise (for example, if you are writing up solutions to someone who doesn't know the subject). Instead of "a line through it saying this: ------- 50 cm," say "a diagonal of length 50 cm."

The ratio of the side length to the diagonal is 1:sqrt(2). So the side length is 50/sqrt(2) = 25sqrt(2).
