Question 836802: Okay, so I need help fully understanding how the Pythagorean theorem works in a question like: Does each set of numbers form a Pythagorean triangle? Explain why or why not. And then it gives me three numbers like: 15, 20, 25. (This is taken from a question that is similar to some assigned to me, but not the exact question, meaning that I can't use this answer to cheat, but to understand how to do my other questions!) Thanks for helping.

Pythagorean theorem can be written a^2 + b^2 = c^2
in the given example, does 15^2 + 20^2 equal 25^2? if it does it's a valid set
225 + 400 = 625, so it is a good set
:
do this with each set of numbers for example 30, 12, 36
30^2 + 12^2 = 36^2
900 + 144 does not equal 1296, so it is not a valid pythag set.

If you have a right triangle, 25 would have to be the hypotenuse,
since it is the longest side.
----
Checking:
25^2 = 15^2 + 20^2
625 = 225 = 400
625 = 625
------
Therefore the triangle is a right triangle
and the triangle is Pythagorean.
