The Pythagorean theorem applies only the right triangles. A right triangle is a triangle which has one angle of 90 degrees. The line segment opposite the 90 degree angle is called the hypoteneuse. The hypoteneuse is related to the other two line segments via the Pythagorean theorem as follows:
Where:
c=length of hypotenuese
a=length of one of the other line segments of the triangle
b=length of the 3rd line segment of the triangle.
