Question 72115: An Indian sand painter begins his picture with a circle of dark sand. He then inscribes a square with a side length of 1 foot inside the circle. What is the area of the circle?
Answer by edjones(8007) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
if the sides of the square are 1 ft long then the diagonal (and the diameter of the circle) is sqrt(2) from the pythagorean theorem.
a^2+b^2=c^2
1^2+1^2=2
c=sqrt(2)
the radius of the circle=sqrt(2)/2
area of circle=
