A cylindrical can is just big enough to hold three tennis balls. The radius of a tennis ball is 5 cm. What is the volume of air that surrounds the tennis balls?
:
I guess you assume the radius of the tennis ball is the same as the radius of the
cylinder. The height of the cylinder will be 3 times the diameters of the balls
:
r = .5
h = .5*6 = 3
Let v = volume of dead air
:
Vol of air around the ball = Vol of the cylinder - 3*vol of the balls
:
v = (pi*.5^2*3) - 3((4/3)pi*r^3)
v = 2.3562 - 1.5708
v = .7854 cu/cm of air
