Question 618749: Dillon's dad built a small baseball diamond in the field behind their house. The diamond formed by the four bases is a square rotated . This means that each base line meets the next to form a angle. The length of each base line is feet. How far would Dillon need to throw the ball to get it from first base to third base? Round your answer to the nearest foot.

You didn't give the number of feet but I can help you solve the problem.
If it is a square you are trying to find the distance from a corner to the opposite corner. Which means that the line is the hypotenuse of a triangle with two equal sides on either side of the 90 degrees.
So if the side is x feet then the way to find the length that you need (lets call it y) you use the formula (Pythagorus theorem):
obviously if the two sides on each side of the right-angle were different then one of the x's would be different from the other, but in this case they are the same.
so simplified
so you would square the length then times by two. Then you you find the square root to find y.

Since it is a square the simplest answer is side times square root of 2. This is what you will get with the other answer also. You didn't tell us how many feet so I can only give you the general answer. Plug in your own numbers.
