The Pythagorean Theorem explains the relationship between the lengths of the three sides of a right triangle. If you ask a random person on the street, they would probably say, "Oh yeah, that's a-squared plus b-squared equals c-squared."
.
The official wording of the Pythagorean Theorem is "The square of the hypotenuse of a right triangle is equal to the sum of the squares of the other two sides."
.
Let's unpack that a bit:
A RIGHT TRIANGLE is any triangle in which one of its angles measures 90-degrees (a right angle).
.
The sides of a right triangle have special names. The HYPOTENUSE is the side across from the right angle. Usually mathematicians label that side with a c. The hypotenuse is the longest side of the triangle. The other two sides of the right triangle are called LEGS. Those sides usually get labeled a and b.
.
In a right triangle, if you square the length of the two sides and add them together, the answer will be the same as the square of the length of the hypotenuse.
.
You can use is relationship to find the missing length of a side of the triangle. For example, suppose you have a right triangle with leg lengths of 3 cm and 4 cm. What would be the length of the hypotenuse?

So the length of the hypotenuse is 5 cm, when the legs are 3 cm and 4 cm.
