Hi,
One side is 'x' the other 'x+12' and the hypotenuse is '60'
Applying the Pythagorean Theorem
x^2 + (x+12)^2 = 3600
2x^2 + 24x + 144 = 3600
2x^2 + 24x -3456 = 0
x^2 + 12x - 1728 = 0
factoring (or using the Quadratic Formula)
(x+48)(x-36) = 0
(x+48)=0 x = -48 |tossing out negative solution for length
(x-36) = 0
x = 36 and the other side = 48
CHECKING our Answer***
1296 + 2304 = 3600
