Question 427257: 10. A boat drops an anchor with a 200-foot chain. The lake is 75 feet deep. How far can the
boat drift in any one direction? Show all your work.
Answer by jorel1380(3719) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
If the chain is 200 feet, and the depth is 75 feet, then the farthest away the boat can drift can be seen as the bottom leg of a right triangle with the length of the chain, 200 feet, as the hypotenuse, and the depth, 75 feet, as the other leg. Thus the bottom leg's length can be calculated as the square root of the square of thehypotenuse minus the square of the opposite leg: 200^2 - 75^2.
200^2-75^2 = 34375
The square root of 34375 is 185.40.
Thus the furthest the boat can drift away is a little over 185 feet.
