When you have a right triangle, the sum of the squares of the shorter legs equals the square of the longest leg (the hypotenuse).

You use it to solve problems where you know 2 legs and want to solve for the hypotenuse or you know the hypotenuse and 1 leg and want to solve for the other leg.
