Let x be the common size of the length and width of the square then x^2+x^2 = 12^2. We must simply solve x^2 + x^2 = 12^2. So 2*x^2 =sqrt(12^2) = 12 = 2*6 = 2^6
x^2 = 6
x = sqrt(6) = 2.44
