the hypotenuse of a right triangle is three times the length of one of the legs. the length of the other leg is the square root of 32 ft.
find the leg and the hypotenuse.
:
Let x = one of the legs
then
3x = the hypotenuse
:
x^2 + ^2 = (3x)^2
:
x^2 + 32 = 9x^2
:
32 = 9x^2 - x^2
:
32 = 8x^2
x^2 =
x^2 = 4
x = 2 is the one side
and
3(2) = 6 is the hypotenuse
:
:
Check: 4 + 32 = 36
