Ferdy uses a guy wire to support a young tree. He attaches it to a point0.6 m up the tree trunk. The wire is 10 m long. How far away from the trunk will the wire reach?
.
NOTE: 0.6 m is NOT very far up the tree trunk -- it wouldn't be much of a support -- are you sure it was .6m up??
.
Apply Pythagorean theorem -- where the guy wire is the hypotenuse.
.
Let x = distance from trunk
then
x^2 + .6^2 = 10^2
x^2 + .36 = 100
x^2 = 99.64
x = sqrt(99.64)
x = 9.982 m
.
