Question 222926: The hypotenuse of a right triangle is 1 cm longer than the longer leg. The shorter leg is 7cm shorter than the longer leg. Find the length of the longer leg of the triangle
leg^2+leg^2=hypotenuse^2.
The legs of the trangle are x and x-7. The hypotenuse is x+1.

Why did you stop there?

The quadratic factors, but one of the roots is too small -- if you subtract 7 to get the measure of the shorter leg, you will have a negative number. So the larger of the two roots is the length of the longer leg.
