: the directions say "Find the value of x. Simplify answers that are radicals." They give me a right triangle and tell me that one of the legs is 5, the hypotonuse is 11 and the altitude is 3. They want me to find the other leg with is labeled x. I didn't think you could find the x unless you knew both of the parts of the hypotenuse?

I'm not sure I understand what you mean by 'both parts of the hypotenuse.'
From your description of the diagram, 11 must be the entire length of the hypotenuse, so you can ignore the altitude measurement and just use the hypotenuse and one leg:
