Question 1070575: Two sides of a right triangle are 8 and 12 inches.
a. Find the missing side if these are the lengths of the legs.
b. Find the missing side if these are the lengths of a leg and hypotenuse.

If these are the legs, their squares, 64+144=208, which is the square of the hypotenuse.
The hypotenuse is sqrt (208)=sqrt(16)*sqrt(13)=4 sqrt (13)
--------------
If one is the hypotenuse, it has to be the longer.
12^2=8^2+ x^2
144=64+x^2
80=x^2
x=4 sqrt (5) is the other leg.
