Question 1061614: The length of Yolanda's closet is 2 feet longer that twice it's width. If the diagonal measures 13 feet, then what are the length and width?

there is a figure showed how one side is 2x+2 ft and 13 ft on the diagonal and x on the shortest line

Let w be the width of the closet. Then the length is 2w+2. So:
w²+(2w+2)²=13²
5w²+8w-165=0
(5w+33)(w-5)=0
w=-33/5 or 5
Discarding the negative value, we get the width of the closet to be 5 ft, and length 12 ft. ☺☺☺☺

width is x
length is 2x+2
hypotenuse squared=x^2+(2x+2)^2=x^2+4x^2+8x+4
That is 5x^2+8x+4=13^2=169
or 5x^2+8x-165=0
x=(1/10)(-8+/- sqrt (64+3300); sqrt (3364)=58
x=(1/10)(50)=5, only positive root.
Therefore, the width is 5 feet, length 12 feet, and diagonal is 13 feet. This is a well known 5-12-13 right triangle.
