Question 168617: Distribute $6,750 among Fred, Grace, and Aaron. Grace should receive twice as much as Fred and Aaron three times as much as Grace.: Distribute $6,750 among Fred, Grace, and Aaron. Grace should receive twice as much as Fred and Aaron three times as much as Grace.
Answer by josmiceli(2018) About Me  (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
f= amount Fred gets
g= amount Grace gets
a= amount Aaron gets
Given:
(1) g = 2f
(2) a = 3g
(3) a + f + g = 6750
-------------
From (1)
(4)f = g/2
Now substitute (2) and (4) into (3)
(3) a + f + g = 6750
(4) 3g + g/2 + g = 6750
Multiply both sides by 2
(5) 6g + g + 2g = 13500
(6) 9g = 13500
(7) g = 1500
Substitute this back in (2)
(2) a = 3g
(8) a = 3*1500
(9) a = 4500
Substitute (7) into (4)
(4) f = g/2
{10) f = 1500/2
(11) f = 750
Fred gets $750, Grace gets $1500, Aaron gets $4500
check:
(1) g = 2f
(2) a = 3g
(3) a + f + g = 6750
--------------
(1) g = 2f
(12) 1500 = 2*750
(13) 1500 = 1500
--------------
(2) a = 3g
(14) 4500 = 3*1500
(15) 4500 = 4500
--------------
(3) a + f + g = 6750
(16) 4500 + 750 + 1500 = 6750
(17) 6750 = 6750
OK
Question 168617: Distribute $6,750 among Fred, Grace, and Aaron. Grace should receive twice as much as Fred and Aaron three times as much as Grace.: Distribute $6,750 among Fred, Grace, and Aaron. Grace should receive twice as much as Fred and Aaron three times as much as Grace.
Answer by midwood_trail(230) About Me  (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Distribute $6,750 among Fred, Grace, and Aaron. Grace should receive twice as much as Fred and Aaron three times as much as Grace.
Fred = x
Grace = 2x
Aaron = 3(2x)
Then:
x + 2x + 3(2x) = 6750
x + 2x + 6x = 6750
9x = 6750
x = 6750/9
x = 750
Fred gets x or $750.
Grace gets 2x or 2(750) = $1,500
Aaron gets 3(2x) or 3(1500) = $4,500
I hope that helps.

Answer by Mathtut(334) About Me  (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!

I believe there are only 2 kinds
:
directly and indirectly
:
y varies directly with x y/x=k
y varies indirectly with x y*x=k
:
:
a third I suppose would be a mixture or combination of those two
:
:
y varies directly with x and indirectly with z (y*z)/x=k

Answer by jim_thompson5910(9168) About Me  (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
7/5=10.5/b Start with the given ratio

(7/5)*b=10.5 Multiply both sides by b

7*b=10.5(5) Multiply both sides by 5

7*b=52.5 Multiply 10.5 and 5 to get 52.5

b=52.5/7 Divide both sides by 7 to isolate "b"

b=7.5 Divide

So our answer is b=7.5

25*(2x+4) is 50x + 100, not 29. You would have gotten it right, even tho you went the long way around, except for that.
-------------------------
50x+29=150
50x+29-29=150-29
50x=121
(50x)/50=(121)/50

No.
(2x+4)/5=30/25 = 6/5
2x+4 = 6
2x = 2
x = 1
I don't know why you call it a "proportion", it's an equation.

Answer by Mathtut(334) About Me  (Show Source):

this question is rather ambiguous. does it have to be even servings?? or can it be partial?? Does the number of people have to be a whole number?? if it has to be even because 3.25/1.25=2.8 then we have to round down to 2 and 2 servings means 6 people served. On the other hand we can use all the ingrediants then we can make 2.8 servings and 2.8*3 = 8.4 people....we will have alot of unused sugar because the low amount of flour limits us. If one had more flour the sugar has the capabilities of making 4.375 servings.

Question 167040: The ratio of Hispanic to Anglo students is 4:5. If the total number of students is 986, how many of them are Anglo?: The ratio of Hispanic to Anglo students is 4:5. If the total number of students is 986, how many of them are Anglo?
Answer by jojo14344(821) About Me  (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!

Condition:
Hispanic/Anglo=H/A=4/5
Remember: H+A=986, EQN 1
Via our Ratio:H/A=4/5, cross multiply
5H=4A ---> cross(5)H/cross(5)=(4/5)A
H=(4/5)A, EQN 2----> subst. in EQN 1:
(4/5)A+A=986
(4A+5A)/5=986 cross multiply
9A=5*986=4930 ---> cross(9)A/cross(9)=cross(4930)547.7/cross(9)
A=547.7>=548, Number of Anglo Students
via Eqn 1:
H=986-548=438, number of Hispanic Students
Check by Ratio in our Condition:
H/A=4/5=0.80>=438/548=0.799, Close enough, that's what given, unless there's typo.

well, logically if you think this out if car B gets 1/3 the mpg that Car A gets then any gas car A uses would mean that car B would uses 3 times that amount
the way you would write this as a proportion is
27mpg*2gal=9mpg*xgal where x is gal used by car B
54=9x and highlight(x=6gal)......how about that 3 times the amount of car A

b)his total trip is about 500 miles. how much gas will he use?

Answer by gonzo(436) About Me  (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
1 tank = 16 gallons
70 miles uses up 1/4 tank
full tank will take him 4 times as far = 280 miles.
-----
since a full tank is 16 gallons, and he can go 280 miles, then he gets 280 / 16 gallons = 17.5 miles per gallon.
----
to travel 500 miles at 17.5 miles per gallon, he will use 500 / 17.5 = 28.57142857 gallons of gas.
-----
28.57142857 gallons / 16 gallons tank capacity = 1.785714286 tanks worth of gas.

Answer by gonzo(436) About Me  (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
assuming the new server is already taking care of the current demand, then 3 servers must already be in service with a capacity of 3 * 41000 = 123000 hits.
-----
if you are currently experiencing 105000 hits per second, then you have spare capacity of 123000 = 105000 = 18000 hits per second.
-----
your expected growth in the next 24 months is 24 * 2800 = 67200 hits per second.
-----
subtract your spare capacity from the expected growth and you have 67200 - 18000 = 49200 growth that you don't have capacity for.
-----
divide that growth by 41000 and you will need 1.2 additional servers.
-----
since you can't buy .2 of a server, you will need 2 additional servers.
-----
not sure if this answers your question.
if it doesn't, then resubmit your question to get other answers.

Let x= invt. in stocks
So, 6000-x= invt. in bonds
Putting into eqn, (assuming money return-interest per year)
0.06x+0.11(6000-x)=580
0.06x+660-0.11x=580
660-580=0.11x-0.06x
80=0.05x ----------> cross(80)1600/cross(0.05)=cross(0.05)x/cross(0.05)
highlight(x=1600), money invested in stocks
6000-1600=highlight(4400), money invested in bonds
Check,
0.06(1600)+0.11(4400)=580
96+484=580

Question 162894: If y varies directly as 2x to the power of 3 and y=54 when x =2 . find k: If y varies directly as 2x to the power of 3 and y=54 when x =2 . find k
Answer by ankor@dixie-net.com(4490) About Me  (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
If y varies directly as 2x to the power of 3 and y=54 when x =2
Writing what I think it says: It's 2x^3 not (2x)^3
y = (2x^3)k
:
find k when y = 54 and x=2
54 = (2*2^3)k
:
54 = 2(8)k
:
54 = 16k
k = 54/16
k = 3.375
:
:
Check solution with this k when x = 2
y = 3.375*2*2^3
y = 3.375(2*8)
y = 3.375*16
y = 54

: The distance traveled by a car with constant speed is directly proportional to the length of time traveled. If the car travels 150km in 2 hr, then how far will it travel in 7 hrs?

Answer by Anthea Lawn(11) About Me  (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Well, if it travels 150km in 2 hours, then in 1 hour it will have travelled half as far - ie 75km.
or,mathematically put : speed = distance / time = 150/2 = 75 km/h
So if it does 75km in 1 hour then in 7 hours it will go 7 times as far as that.
distance = 7 X 75 = 525 km.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Note: you don't need to find the equation of the line, you only need the slopes of two lines to figure if they are parallel, perpendicular, or neither

Slope of PQ:

m=(y[2]-y[1])/(x[2]-x[1]) Start with the slope formula.

m=(5-1)/(6--2) Plug in y[2]=5, y[1]=1, x[2]=6, and x[1]=-2. These values come from the points P(-2,1) and Q(6,5)

m=(4)/(6--2) Subtract 1 from 5 to get 4

m=(4)/(8) Subtract -2 from 6 to get 8

m=1/2 Reduce

So the slope of the line that goes through the points P(-2,1) and Q(6,5) is m=1/2

Since the product of the given slope -2 and the slope 1/2 is (-2)(1/2)=-2/2=-1, this means that the two lines are perpendicular.

Note: you used the same slope twice to get your answer. You forgot to calculate the slope of the line that goes through PQ (see above)

Question 162463: x/8=x-5/6
I assume your problem is x/8=(x-5)/6; where (x-5) should all be above the 6, in this case by cross multiplying we obtain
6x=8(x-5)
6x=8x-40
6x-8x=8x-8x-40
-2x=0-40
-2x/-2=-40/-2

Solve for x?
x/8 = (x-5)/6 Cross-multiply.
6x = 8(x-5) Perform the indicated multiplication on the right side.
6x = 8x-40 Add 40 to both sides.
40+6x = 8x Subtract 6x from both sides.
40 = 2x Finally, divide both sides by 2.
20 = x or x = 20

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Maria waxes her car in 2 hours. When she works with Susan, they can wax the car
in 45 mins. How long will it take Susan, working by herself, to wax the car?
:
Let x = time required by Susan by herself
:
Change 45 min to hrs: 45/60 = .75 hrs
:
Let the completed job = 1
:
Each will do a fraction of the job and will add up to 1
:
.75/2 + .75/x = 1
Multiply equation by 2x to eliminate the denominators, solve for x
.75x + 2(.75) = 2x
:
.75x + 1.5 = 2x
:
1.5 = 2x - .75x
:
1.5 = 1.25x
x = 1.5/1.25
x = 1.2 hrs, for Susan to do the job by herself

You must apply the distance formula:
d = rt
where
d is distance
r is rate or speed
t is time
.
Let x = time driven
58x + 62x = 480
120x = 480
x = 4 hours

a cashier has a total of 125 bills made up of fives and tens. The total value of the money is $815. How many ten-dollar bills does the cashier have?
.
Let x = number of ten-dollar bills
then from "a cashier has a total of 125 bills" we know:
125-x = number of five-dollar bills
.
Since the total is 815:
10x + 5(125-x) = 815
10x + 625 - 5x = 815
5x + 625 = 815
5x = 190
x = 38

X=5.4/((8/100)*(40/100))
X=(5.4*100*100)/(8*40)
X=(5400)/(320)
X=675/4
X=168.75

The fuel for a two-cycle motorboat engine is a mixture of gasoline and oil in the ratio of 15 to 1. How many liters of each are in 6.6 L mixture ?
"the ratio of 15 to 1" means that for every 15L of gasoline, we add 1L of oil.
So if we have a 16L mixture, we would have 1L of oil and 15L of gas---OK
Now we can set up our ratio:
Let x=amount of oil in the 6.6L mixture
Then 6.6-x=amount of gas
16 is to 1 as 6.6 is to x and this is written in math terms as follows:
16/1=6.6/x multiply each side by x or cross multiply
16x=6.6 divide each side by 16
x=0.412L----amount of oil in the 6.6L mixture
6.6-x=6.6-0.412=6.188L-----amount of gas
CK
6.188/0.412=15/1
15~~~~~~15 roundoff error
Hope this helps--ptaylor
