Question 812994: I'm currently working on fractions,trying to change improper fractions to whole or mixed numbers. I come across the problem 15/9 and its telling me 9 goes in 15 twice how is that possible when 9 plus 9 is 18. Please help I am seriously confused!!!!

9 only goes into 15 one whole time. So the quotient is 1 (and NOT 2, so you are correct in saying that it cannot be 2)

The remainder will be 15 - 9 = 6

So, therefore

15/9 = 1 remainder 6

This then tells us that

Notice how the whole/quotient part is in front of the fraction 6/9 and how the remainder 6 is over the original denominator of 9.

You then reduce 6/9 to get 2/3 (divide each piece by 3)
