Question 569235: Please help prove "if x < y,
then -y<-x"
Answer by jim_thompson5910(35256) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
x < y ... Start with the given inequality.
x - x < y - x ... Subtract x from both sides
0 < y - x ... Subtract x-x to get 0x or 0
0-y < y - x - y ... Subtract y from both sides
-y < -x ... Simplify 0-y to get -y and subtract y-y to get 0y or 0 (and that goes away)
So this shows us that if x < y, then -y < -x
