x and y are even numbers Given
Let x = 2a by Definition of an even number
Let y = 2b by Definition of an even number
x + y = 2a + 2b
x + y = 2(a + b) Distributive Law
x+y = 2p where p is a number equal to (a+b)
x+y is even by Definition of an even number
