1.the greater of two consecutive integers is 10 less than twice the smaller, find the integer



Answer: 

Let x be the smaller number

   x + 1 be the greater number



   x + 1 = 2x - 10

       1 = 2x - x - 10

       1 = x - 10

  1 + 10 = x

      11 = x   smaller number



    x + 1 = the greater number 

   11 + 1 = 12



Therefore 12 is the greater number and 11 is the smaller number.











2. the greater of two consecutive even integers is 10 less than twice the smaller. find the integers



Let x be the smaller number

   x + 2 be the greater number



   x + 2 = 2x - 10

       2 = 2x - x - 10

       2 = x - 10

  10 + 2 = x

      12 = x



    x + 2 = the greater number

   12 + 2 = 14



Therefore the greater number is 14 and the smaller number is 12.









3. find 3 consecutive odd integers such that twice the smaller is 3 more than the greatest integer



Let x be the first odd integer

   x + 2 be the second odd integer

   x + 4 be the third odd integer



     2x = (x + 4) + 3

     2x = 3x + 7

    -7 = x



   x + 2 = the second odd integer

  -7 + 2 = -5 



  x + 4 = the 3rd odd integer

  -7 + 4 = -3



Therefore the 3 consecutive odd integers are -3, -5, -7
