Question 907045: the sum of two numbers is ten. three times the larger number is three less than eight times the smaller number. find the smaller number
Answer by CubeyThePenguin(3113) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
x = larger integer, y = smaller integer
x + y = 10
3x = 8y - 3
Substitute x = 10 - y into the second equation.
3(10 - y) = 8y - 3
30 - 3y = 8y - 3
33 = 11y
y= 3
We get (x, y) = (7, 3). The smaller number is y = 3.
