Question 839284: The Product of two numbers is 2, and one of the numbers is 4 more than the other. Find th numbers using the Quadratic Formula.
Answer by CubeyThePenguin(3113) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
xy = 2
x = y + 4
Substitute the second equation into the first equation.
(y + 4)(y) = 2
y^2 + 4y - 2 = 0
y = (-4 +- sqrt(16 - 4(1)(-2))/(2)
= (-4 +- sqrt(24))/(2)
= (-4 +- 2sqrt(6))/(2)
= -2 +- sqrt(6)
