Question 813977: find two numbers such that the sum of the first and three times the second is five and the sum of the second and two times the first is 8?

Answer by CubeyThePenguin(3113)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
x + 3y = 5
2x + y = 8

Multiply the second equation by -3 and add:

x + 3y = 5
-6x - 3y = -24
------------------
-5x = -19 ------> x = 19/5

y = (5 - 19/5)/3 = 2/5

(x, y) = (19/5, 2/5)
