Mary owns three collies,and several other dogs. What other dogs (and how many of each) does Mary own.

3 poodles, 6 cocker spaniels and 7 (collies and German Shepherds combined)
Joanne - 4 cocker spaniels and 2 German shepherds (6 dogs)
Paula - 1 poodle and 2 German Shepherds (3 dogs)
Mary - 3 collies and several other dogs (must have a total of 16-6-3=7 dogs)
Mary has 3 collies and the others each have 2 German Shepherds so the 7 of those dogs are all accounted for.
1 poodle is accounted for so there must be two left for Mary.
4 cocker spaniels are accounted for so there must be two left for Mary.
So Mary has 2 poodles, 2 cocker spaniels and 3 collies (ie 7 dogs).
