Three consecutive integers
x, x+1, x+2
...
For their sum to be negative, it must be < 0
x + x+1 + x+2 < 0
3x + 3 < 0
...
Isolate x by subtracting 3 from both sides
3x + 3 - 3 < 0 - 3
3x < -3
...
Divide both sides by 3
3x/3 < -3/3
x < -1
...
so if x is -2, which is 1 less than -1 (or -1-1), then
-2 + -2+1 + -2+2 = -2 + -1 + 0 = -3
Integers are: -2, -1 and 0
