you can use the standard form of equation of a straight line to solve this problem:

y=mx+b, m=slope, b=y-intercept

For given problem:

let x=distance from hotel to airport

slope=$3.50/mi

y-intercept=$2.25

y=44.25

..

44.25=3.5x+2.25

3.5x=44.25-2.25=42

x=42/3.5=12

distance from hotel to airport=12 miles
