"The sum of two consecutive even integers is 138. Find the numbers."

x = first even integer
x + 2 = second even integer

x + x + 2 = 138 {their sum is 138}
2x + 2 = 138 {combined like terms}
2x = 136 {subtracted 2 from both sides}
x = 68 {divided both sides by 2}
x + 2 = 70 {substituted 68, in for x, into x + 2}

68 and 70 are the two consecutive even integers
