Let the smaller number be "x".
The other number is "2x+1".

Equation:
x + 2x+1 = 40
3x = 39
x = 13 (the smaller number)
2x+1 = 27 (the larger number)

Let x and (2x+1) represent the numbers
Question states***
x + (2x+1)= 40
Solving for x
3x = 39
x = 13 and (2x+1)= 27
CHECKING our Answer***
13 + 27 = 40
