The difference between two number is 10 and their sum is equal to 4 times the smaller number. What are the numbers ?.
Sol'n:
Let x-the larger number
y-the smaller number
x-y=10 ---(1)
x+y=4y
x-3y=0 ---(2)
(1)-(2)
2y=10
y=5
for x:
from (1)
x=10+y
x=10+5
x=15
thus, x=15 & y=5 ----answer
