Question 355012: The sum of two numbers is 42. One number is 2 times as large as the other. What are the numbers?

Answer by mananth(16946)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
let the numbers be x & y
x+y =42
x=2y
x-2y=0
...
multiply first equation by -1
-x-y=-42
add it to equation 2
-2y-y = -42
-3y=-42
y = -42/-3
y=14
...
x+y =42
y=14
so x= 28
the numbers are 14 & 28
