x + y = 14
2x- y = 1

Add and solve for "x":
3x = 15
x = 5

Substitute for "x" and solve for "y":
5+y = 14
y = 9

x smaller number, y larger number
x + y = 14
2x - y = 1
y = 14 - x
2x - 14 + x = 1
3x - 14 = 1
3x = 15
x = 5
y = 14 - 5 = 9
