the product of two consecutive integers is 71 more than their sum.Find the integers.
Let the number be x.
the consequtive number will x+1
the product of the two numbers = x*(x+1)
x*(x+1) = x + x+1 +71 ------------- 1 (71 more than the sum of the two numbers)
x^2+x = 2x+72
x^2+x-2x-72=0
x^2-x-72=0
x^2-9x+8x-72=0
x(x-9) + 8(x-9) = 0
(x-9)(x+8)=0
so x= 9 or -8
The value of -8 satisfies the condition in equation 1
So the numbers are -8 and -7
