Answer by drk(1908) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
step 1: We graph Y < 2x + 3. Place a dot on the Y-axis at 3. Then move the slope, up 2 over 1. Place a second dot. Draw a dashed line through these points and extend it downward into Quadrant 2 and 3. Shade down or toward you.
step 2: Graph Y> -X. Here the Y intercept is zero, so place a dot at the origin. From this dot, move the slope, down 1 over 1 and place another dot. Draw a dashed line here, but shade up and away from you.
You now have a region that is double shaded - the equation Y < 2X + 3 intersects the equation Y > -X at (-1,1). Then you have the line y > -X from that point.
Now if we substitute (0,2) as a test point, we get
2 < 2(0) + 3 - -> 2 < 3 [true]
2 > -0 - -> 2 > 0 [true]
If you wanted to check (-1,1) you can but use = instead. This will tell you where the two lines should cross:
1 = 2(-1) + 3 = 1 [true]
1 = -(-1) = 1 [true]
hope this makes sense.
