Start with what we know... f = flies w = worms
(1)10f + 4w = $34
(2)6f + 12w = $30
so we want to eliminate a variable...the best way to do this is pick the w..since they need to be opposite is order to equal zero..we will need to do something to the equation(1) to make that happen.
so multiple equation (1) by -3 that will give us
(1)-30f - 12w = -102 now add that to equation (2)
so:
-30f - 12w = -$102 added
6f + 12w = $30
Equals
-24f + 0 = -$72
-24f = -$72
divide both sides by -24
then:
f =$3 so now we know that the flies are $3 each..
plug that into equation (1) and solve for worms (w)
10(3) + 4w = $34
30 + 4w = $34 subtract both sides by 30
so:
4w = $4 divide both sides by 4 and w = $1
SO NOW YOU KNOW THAT Worms are $1 apiece and flies are $3 apiece
