let x = the number.
x * (x + 1) = 72
simplify to get:
x^2 + x = 72
subtract 72 from both sides of the equation to get:
x^2 + x - 72 = 0
factor the equation to get:
(x + 9) * (x - 8) = 0
solve for x to get:
x = -9 or x = 8
if x = 8, then 8 * 9 = 72
if x = -9, then -9 * -8 = 72
your answer will be either 8 and 9 or -9 and -8.
