Two consecutive even integers exist such that one-third of the lesser is equal to five less of the greater.
What is the sum of these two integers?
:
let the two consecutive even integers be n and (n+2)
Write an equation for exactly what it says
n = (n+2) - 5
n = n - 3
multiply both sides by 3
n = 3(n-3)
n = 3n - 9
9 = 3n - n
9 = 2n
n = 9/2, I don't think they do exist, however their sum is
4.5 + 6.5 = 11
