Compare the equation and the problem description very carefully. The equation is a perfect transcription of the problem statement. The "44" is on the right hand side of the equation and is on of the terms summed. This is irrelevant as long as the correct equation is made. One can just as well say, , but doing this is less easy to see the correspondence between equation and worded description.

How can the problem: Find 3 consecutive odd integers such that 4 times the first is 44 more than the sum of the second and third?
Let 1st integer be F
Then 2nd and 3rd are: F + 2, and F + 4, respectively
We then get: 4F = F + 2 + F + 4 + 44
4F = 2F + 50
4F - 2F = 50
2F = 50
F, or 1st integer = , or
The 2nd and 3rd integers are:
Yes, it is that simple...not complex at all!
