x & (x+2) are the consecutive even numbers.
(x+2)=3x-6
x-3x=-6-2
-2x=-8
x=-8/-2
x=4 answer for the lesser number
4+2=6 for the greater number.
proof
6=3*4-6
6=12-6
6=6
