Question 946485: This question is really throwing me off, I'm not even sure how to start it off..Can someone please help?
Assume that each birth to the same parents is an independent event with p(girl)=p(boy)= 1/2. For a family with 3 children, find the probability of exactly 2 boys, given that the first child is a boy.
Answer by rothauserc(4718) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Note that independent events are not affected by previous events.
therefore,
Probability of an event happening = Number of ways it can happen / Total number of outcomes
lets look at the total number of outcomes with the first child a boy,
(boy, girl, boy), (boy, boy, girl), (boy, boy, boy), (boy, girl, girl)
now,
the probability of exactly 2 boys, given that the first child is a boy = 2/4 = 1/2
