Question 934882: The odds against students X solving a statistics problem are 8:6 and odds in favor of a student U solving the problem are 14:16.what is the chance that the problem will be solved if they both try independently of each other and what is the probability that neither solves the problem?

The odds against students X solving a statistics problem are 8:6
P(X solves) = 6/14 = 3/7
P(X fails to solve) = 8/14 = 4/7
------------------------------------------
and odds in favor of a student U solving the problem are 14:16
P(U solves) = 14/30 = 7/15
P(U fails to solve) = 16/30 = 8/15
-------------------------------------------------
.what is the chance that the problem will be solved if they both try independently of each other
Ans; P(solve) = 1 - P(both fail) = 1 - (4/7)(8/15) = 1-(32/105) = 73/105
------------------------------
and what is the probability that neither solves the problem?
Ans: P(both fail) = (4/7)(8/15) = 32/105
-------------------------------------------
