Question 931550: What is the difference between tosing 1 coin two times and tossing two coins at the same time ??
I think the sample space in the first case should be {HH,HT,TH,TT}
and in the second case should be {HH,HT,TT} because when we tossing two coins at the same time there is no difference between HT and TH !!!
What do you Think about that ? please give me an explination with details
Thank you
Answer by Theo(13342) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
there should be no difference.
if you toss a coin twice, the possible outcomes are:
hh
ht
th
tt
what this means is that the probability of getting 2 heads is .25 and the probability of getting 2 tails is .25 and the probability of getting a tail and a head is equal to 2 * .25 = .5
if you toss 2 coins together, the possible outcomes are:
hh
ht
th
tt
you'll get the same probabilities.
2 heads would occur .25 of the time.
2 tails would occur .25 of the time.
a head and a tail would occur .25 of the time.
the fact that you can't tell which coin the tail or the head came from when you toss both coins in the air at the same time is irrelevant.
the head and the tail will come up 50% of the time either way.
